Pictures: Amazing views from the top of Lord Hill's Column in Shrewsbury
[gallery] It takes a spiral of 172 steps to reach the top – but the view is worth it.
Shropshire Star photographer Jamie Ricketts was among scores of visitors who took the opportunity to climb to the top of Lord Hill's Column as part of the English Heritage Open Doors weekend.
He made the climb and then took in the landscape as he sat on the viewing platform at the top.
The landmark boasts some of the best views in Shropshire, but access to the top is strictly limited.
The Friends of Lord Hill group help to open it up for special events through the year, raising money for its ongoing restoration. Last year 1,300 visitors were lucky enough to experience the climb.
Thousands took part on the Open Doors event over the weekend. Sites that are not normally open to the public offered guided tours, including Shrewsbury Flaxmill Maltings, The White House at Aston Munslow and the gardens at Brogyntyn Hall.
