Pictures: Shropshire water baby Cerys born on canal boat

A narrow boat may not be a typical maternity ward – but it is where Cerys Rhiannon Firmin came into the world.

The baby was born on the Whitchurch Aam of the Llangollen Canal.

Her home is the narrow boat "Molly Llangollen", currently moored at the Wharf in Audlem, near Market Drayton.

Cerys' mother and father Kailey and Joshua run a cafe from their boat and travel the canal network moving from event to event.

They chose to use an independent midwife, Amanda Garside, who is based in Shrewsbury and travelled to them for appointments and the birth.

Mrs Firmin said: "It was a planned boat birth as we are roving canal traders.

"We needed to travel through multiple counties so it made midwife care with the NHS a logistical nightmare.

"We chose to use an independent midwife who we found on the independent midwives UK website. Amanda Garside travelled to us for appointments. I would never have been able to have the birth I wanted if it wasn't for Amanda and the independent midwife world."

Baby Cerys, weighing 8lbs, was born at about 8pm on September 8.

Mrs Firmin added: "This being baby number three I was very happy to not go into hospital, which was a good job.

"Although my waters broke on Wednesday and I had mild contractions all day, active labour didn't start until 5pm Thursday, giving under three hours start to finish.

"Whitchurch Waterways Trust say it's a first for them having a baby born in the restored arm.

"The trust, who own and run the canal arm where she was born, were amazing.

"I had to go into Wrexham hospital after the birth which lead to us needing to over stay on the mooring.

"After we contacted them they were super supportive even with the disturbance of two ambulances and a paramedic car turning up in the quiet farm."

The couple have been living on the boat for the last 13 months and said they really enjoy their new life.

They home-school their two boys – eight-year-old Aiden and four-year-old Henry.

Mrs Firmin added: "We all love our new life, we meet so many people on our travels.

"We have the best views and the biggest back garden."

"We run The Beverage Boat Café from our boat which has a 1940's wartime theme.

"We all dress up and decorate the boat."

The family will soon be heading to Birmingham for their next event.
