The firm said it was having to close the road to ensure the safety of its workers and the public.

Ria Gaffney, spokeswoman for Severn Trent, said: "Over time, water pipes can become more likely to burst and cause problems for our customers.

"To prevent this, we're renewing the pipes on Birch Road, Ellesmere, so local residents can continue to enjoy a reliable, top quality water supply. We're starting work on November 7 and we're aiming to finish in around 10 days."

"To ensure the safety of our team and the public, we're having to close Birch Road and so there will be a diversion in place.

"Our teams have worked closely with businesses, residents and bus companies to make sure this causes as little disruption as possible.

"We're really sorry if this work causes any problems for local residents but we're sure they'll agree that, in the long run, it'll be worth it."
