The huge Ministry of Defence centre for Logistics, Commodities and Services development at Donnington will be worth an estimated £60 million to the area's economy when it it completed.

Work is progressing well and is on target for operations to start next summer at the centre, which will be used for storing and distributing non weaponry equipment to soldiers around the world.

There are two buildings being constructed at the base, known as Fulfilment Centre 1 and Fulfilment Centre 2. The concrete flooring of both units have been laid, while shelving units and light fittings are currently being installed.

Telford & Wrekin Council leader Shaun Davies shares his thoughts

Leader of Telford & Wrekin Council Shaun Davies said: "In Donnington, work on the Ministry of Defence Fulfilment Centre is on track for operations to start in the new year. This could be worth £60m a year to the local economy as well as safeguarding hundreds of jobs and creating more."

Councillor Davies said he was delighted that number of Telford businesses have already secured contracts to work with the new logistics hub, providing goods and services.

The council said that it is expected that the MoD's new centre will be fully operational by the end of next summer.

Build contractor McLaren has almost finished the outer work on the shell of the hubs and builders and fitters are working on the internal aspects of the development.

In addition the exterior landscape work is already being prepared.

It was announced in February last year that Telford had been chosen as the site for the new defence fulfilment centre and work started last November.

When completed the hub will provide everything from food to clothing for servicemen and women officers both based at home and and abroad.

Councillors and union representatives were recently given a tour of the site that is being built at a cost of £130m by to see how work on the site was progressing. Work is well on track and it is set to bring 700 jobs to Shropshire's economy.

MOD Donnington's Parsons Barracks and Venning Barracks that occupy about 52 acres of the army base are due to be sold off to make way for commercial developments.

Parsons Barracks, off Hortonwood 30, is home to the 174 Provost Company of the Royal Military Police and the Special Investigation Branch. Venning Barracks, in Donnington Drive, is the headquarters of 11th Signal Brigade, a medical centre and officers' mess.
