Jane Warburton and her son Dean, from Bucknell, were pronounced dead at the scene of the crash on the A49 near Dorrington.

The inquest at Shirehall in Shrewsbury was told Mrs Warburton, 69, was driving a green Vauxhall Corsa towards Shrewsbury when it failed to negotiate a bend and crossed the centre white line and went on to the wrong side of the road.

It was then involved in a head-on collision with a heavy goods vehicle.

Mr Warburton, 38, was a front seat passenger in the Corsa.

He was a well-known artist, often working across the Welsh border at the Celf o Gwmpas Centre in Llandrindod Wells.

The crash happened at about 10.45am on July 1.

Peter Langley was the driver of the other vehicle involved in the crash. He said in a statement read out to the inquest: "I remember the bang. It was horrendous. I have never experienced anything like that."

He added: "I was driving through the bends and she was driving on her side of the road quite normally.

"Coming off a shallow bend she seemed to be quite in control of the vehicle.

"For no apparent reason she just came over on to my side of the road over the white line and I just stood on my brakes.

"I thought she had just lost control but she just kept coming. I swerved to my left to try and avoid her."

The court also heard statements from other witnesses who all described the driving of the Corsa to be normal before it continued straight over the bend into the path of the HGV.

Pc Allan Byallas, a collision investigator, said there was no evidence of Mrs Warburton braking in the lead-up to the collision.

He said: "The vehicles have impacted massively, causing the front of the Corsa to be completely destroyed.

"It has then forced the Corsa back and rotated clockwise 180 degrees.

"Evidence suggests there has been no braking by the driver of the Corsa. Nothing suggests the driver lost control, having negotiated the right hand bend correctly."

A post mortem examination said Mrs Warburton's cause of death was multiple traumatic injuries and Mr Warburton died as a result of traumatic head and spinal injuries.

Shropshire coroner John Ellery, recording a conclusion of death by road traffic collision, said: "It is clear the Corsa has travelled across the centre of the road. There is nothing to suggest lost control of the vehicle.

"There is no evidence to offer an explanation of why the vehicle has done this."
