Ross Kayley had been sleeping overnight in his van in a desperate effort to bring his faithful little four-legged friend - who had been spotted numerous times in the Whitchurch area - home again.
And he offered a £200 reward for the safe return of his canine companion, who had been zig-zagging from Cockshutt to Tilstock - about 15 miles and had spent one night in a shed and been fed but had already left when the homeowner returned the following morning.
Ross said: "I found Billy dead on Saturday morning in the same spot where I had looked for him just 24 hours before, along the railway track after I had been told he had been spotted there. He was hit by a train.
"I've been overwhelmed by the support we have had from people searching for him and spreading awareness on Facebook, I've had so many calls about it and people searched for Billy with drones and balloons - now a lot of people will feel heartbroken but I thank them all for their help.
"I'm going to bury Billy at a sacred spot near a friend's waterfall, which will never be sold and we are going to plant a tree there.
"This is a tragic ending that nobody wanted but Billy loved that spot."
Ross, a tree surgeon had taken Billy, aged four years old everywhere with him, as working and had owned him from a pup.
He had plotted the route he had taken in a desperate race to find him alive.
