The black cross-breed dog was taken to a pet rescue centre after it was spotted tethered in a country lane.

Now the operators at Hillbrae Rescue Kennels in Telford said they are worried that the incident will mark the start of reports of unwanted pets being abandoned ahead of the festive season. They are appealing to owners to take homeless dogs to registered kennels if they cannot keep them any longer.

The male dog was seen at the roadside near to the M54 services at junction four. The volunteers believe he may have come from the Walsall area.

Marty Burrell, proprietor, said: "If people don't want their pets anymore then this is not the way to do it. We are concerned that this is a sign of things to come.

"We only used to see this sort of thing after Christmas if puppies have been given as gifts and then the new owners realise afterwards that they can't look after them.

"But in recent years in the run up to Christmas we are seeing animals being dumped. We're not sure if this is happening due to the cold weather or if people are making room for new pets.

"Someone will know this dog because it has quite a distinctive tail. Its tail has previously been broken in two different places. It appears to be a cross-bred German Shepherd.

"It's a sweet little thing, a nice dog and he is not nervous. No one has got in touch to check if he's been handed in. He's got a micro chip which states he belongs to somebody in Walsall, but the information is out of date. It may have been rehomed previously and the new owner didn't bother to change the chip."

The dog was untied by a passing family from Donnington and taken to the kennels last week.
