Anthony Joshua boxing gloves set to deal cancer a blow
As Anthony Joshua prepares to defend his IBF world title against Eric Molina next month, Richie Woodhall is hoping his boxing gloves will deal some crucial blows to the battle against cancer.
A pair of gloves signed by Joshua will go under the hammer in Richie Woodhall's latest charity auction at Halls in Shrewsbury on December 14 – four days after his crucial fight with American Molina.
It is the latest in a series of auctions held by former WBC super-middleweight champion Richie, who lives in Telford, to raise money for cancer charities.
The auctions have been organised by Richie in memory of his father Len, who died in July last year after a long battle with cancer.
The proceeds from the latest auction will go towards the Jayne Sargent Foundation, a charity set up to provide support to cancer patients in Telford and the surrounding areas.
The charity, founded by Colin Sargent in memory of his wife Jayne, runs monthly support groups and organises information and therapy services.
Richie said if, as expected, Joshua succeeds knocking out Molina next month, it would pave the way for a hotly anticipated clash with Vladimir Klitschko, with a chance to claim the WBA "super" title previously held by Tyson Fury.
"Molina is a tremendous puncher, but Anthony Joshua should win, setting up a massive fight with Vladimir Klitschko. With Tyson Fury out the way at the moment, that will be the biggest event in the world of boxing, so these gloves will make a brilliant Christmas present for somebody."
The auction will be at Halls main sale rooms in Battlefield, Shrewsbury, at 10am on December 14.
They can be viewed between 9.30am and 4.30pm the day before, or on the day of auction from 9am.
Anyone unable to attend can ask the auctioneer to bid on their behalf up to an agreed limit. Call 01743 450700 to arrange this. Alternatively, it is possible to bid online by registering at the-saleroom.com/halls
