Alveley Post Office has been put up for sale and is due to be closed next year unless it can be taken over.

Alveley Parochial Church Council has consulted a number of people about taking on the running of the Post Office and had meetings with officials from head office.

The council decided it could not continue to run the Post Office to the standard it has been run for many years. It said the loss of the service would be "detrimental" to the life of the community.

Post Office spokeswoman Valerie Antoine, said: "We are aware that the postmaster at Alveley has expressed an interest in leaving and has put the business on the market.

"We would like to reassure customers that the post office is committed to maintaining a post office service in the area and will work hard to ensure this.

"The branch continues to operate as normal from 9am to 5.30pm Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, 9am to 1pm on Wednesday and 9am to 12.30pm on Saturday.

"Local residents and small business customers are able to access the wide range of Post Office and mails services, including special delivery, local collect, home shopping returns, and make online banking cash deposits and withdrawals, withdrawals using a Post Office card account, send funds abroad using Moneygram, pay bills, pre-order travel money, apply for travel insurance and top up mobile phones."

Post Offices across the region have either closed or had their hours changed over the last few years.

Others have moved to different locations, including pubs and shops.
