The scheme to create a new walkway, community orchard and new play areas at Queensway Playing Fields has been approved by Shropshire Council.

Surrounded by one of the town's largest residential areas, the playing fields cover two acres of mature parkland and feature a playground, football pitch, woodland and a fishing lake.

The redevelopment also involves creating log bridges, stepping posts, retaining wall, fencing and gates.

The new walkway will help make the existing fishing pond more accessible for disabled people.

A report by Shropshire Council case officer Mark Perry said: "Taking into account all of the above it is considered that the proposal will have a positive impact on the provision of recreational facilities locally, making good use of the existing open space which adjoins the housing estate."

The project has been given a £10,000 grant from the Tesco Bags of Help fund.

Grocontinental, which is based in the town, has also donated £6,000.

The cash injection will guarantee that the park remains open for local residents over the next three years.

It will be specifically used to fund essential running costs such as maintenance of equipment and insurance.

The latest funding provided by Grocontinental follows a donation of £4,000 made by the company in 2014 to support a renovation programme at the playing fields, which included refurbishment of play equipment and the provision of timber to create 16 double fishing pegs around the park's lake.
