The vigil on Friday evening, organised by Shropshire & Telford Stand Up to Racism, was about "showing unity", as well as paying respects to those who were killed or injured in the atrocity, say organisers.

Andy Brown, one of the organisers from the Stand Up to Racism group, said: "Tonight really is about all of us coming together to pay tribute to those innocent people who were killed or injured in the attack, as well as paying tribute to those who stuck their neck out for others on Wednesday.

"This is about unity and coming together, and showing that despite what the far right groups say, we are all united and horrified by what's happened this week."

Reporter Naomi Penrose tweeted:

It comes as Dr Mohammed Qureshi, one of the trustees for Shropshire Islamic Foundation, said they condemn the actions of those responsible for the attack.

He said: "The Shropshire Islamic Foundation utterly condemns the appalling and senseless atrocity committed on innocent people at Westminster Bridge and the Houses of Parliament.

"We are especially saddened at the loss of PC Keith Palmer. No doubt his fearless and brave actions prevented further loss of life. Our deepest condolences go out to his family and the families of all those who lost their lives. We extend our best wishes to those injured and wish them a speedy recovery.

"It is at times such as these that we, as a community, need to come together to condemn violence and hatred and work towards cohesion and tolerance."
