Actor to DJ at Shrewsbury nightspot

Actor, host and broadcaster Craig Charles of Red Dwarf, Robot Wars, The Gadget Show and Coronation Street fame will be performing a live DJ show in Shrewsbury next month.

Craig Charles will be DJing at the Buttermarket next month

Craig, who has a reputation as one of the UK's foremost funk and soul DJs and has been broadcasting for a decade on BBC 6 Music, will be at the Buttermarket Cellars, Howards Bank on May 19.

2009 saw the creation of The Craig Charles Funk & Soul Club, a night of dancefloor funk and soul inspired music, and he performs DJ sets in clubs up and down the country, as well as holding residencies at Manchester’s Band on the Wall and London’s The Jazz Café.

Away from the clubs, Craig’s Funk & Soul Club has a busy festival touring schedule with DJ sets at Glastonbury, Parklife, Lovebox, Soundwave, Great Northern Mod & Ska Festival and Mostly Jazz, Funk and Soul Festival, where he will curating and hosting his own stage playing alongside the likes of Chic & Roy Ayers.

Grant Lees, operations director at the Buttermarket said: "We are really excited about the show. Demand for tickets has been great and we had an overwhelming response. The first release of tickets sold out within two days. Further tickets have now been released and are available on our website.

"We worked really hard with the promoter, Planet of the Breaks, to secure Craig to play at the Buttermarket as he has been very busy with other projects. We are thrilled to have been able to work with Planet of the Breaks to make this happen."

The gig starts at 11pm with local DJs, including Pop Up House, taking to the stage prior to Craig's set.
