Plans put forward for the site off Shrewsbury Road in Shifnal

The proposals for the site of the Old Baptist Church on Shrewsbury Road in Shifnal had been discussed last year after being presented to nearby residents by Shropshire Towns and Rural Housing.

But the plans have now moved forward another step having been put to Shropshire Council for approval to demolish the church, which although now derelict was previously used as a magistrates court.

In documents submitted on behalf of STaR Housing, DJD Architechts said: "STaR is committed to local communities and to providing good quality affordable homes for people that need them most.

"STaR has been working closely with Shifnal Town Council to re-develop the site of the Old Baptist Chapel and to provide much needed affordable homes in the town."

The plans would see the building, built about 170-years-ago, flattened to make way for a new one holding two flats. A second building would hold five flats behind, all of which would be affordable.

Shifnal Town Council has previously looked at a number of schemes to bring it back into community use, though it has been left in disrepair for decades.

A consultation event was held last year to show residents the plans. The report said: "The feedback indicated significant support for the plans and the need to bring the site back into productive use.

"The main concerns raised were over car parking and the need to avoid additional parking on Shrewsbury Road.

"We believe the proposals provide for reasonable parking provision for affordable housing in a sustainable location in easy walking distance of public transport and local shops and services and represent a better alternative than a non-housing use."

The plans are available to view on Shropshire Council's website.
