Road near Telford closed because of unstable culvert
A road near Telford could be closed for months after an underground waterway was found to be unstable.
Back Road in Sheriffhales has been closed for a number of days because of concern about a culvert which lies under the carriageway.
Consultants Mouchel have now told Shropshire Council that the culvert is unsafe and the road will have to be formally closed.
It has now been found to be unstable and the road could now be closed for months while the problem is rectified.
Residents living in the village have been sent a letter outlining the problem and warning of the long closure that could be in place.
Contractors Ringway will close the road and prevent vehicle access over the culvert today
Graham Downes, Shropshire Council’s highways manager for south east, said: “Shropshire Council has closed Back Road in Sheriffhales because of a structurally unsound culvert which is sited under the carriageway.
"Both the culvert and carriageway are at risk of collapse.
"Local residents have been written to, as well as local councillors and the parish council. Veolia are aware as regards waste and recycling collections.
"The road may be closed for a number of months.”
