Telford Crematorium could get two new car parks to help prevent "distressing and upsetting" traffic issues for mourners.

The crematorium has submitted plans for 46 additional car parking spaces after those attending services were getting stuck on grass verges when it rained – leaving them having to wait to be towed by tractors.

Agent Louise Flower of LF Architecture said: "The crematorium has one service chapel which seats 150 people, with ample standing room for larger numbers of mourners.

"The crematorium does however have a limited number of on-site car parking spaces, resulting in visitors to the crematorium regularly having to park on Woodhouse Lane and the grassed area to the north end of the site.

"When the grass is wet, parked vehicles have to be towed off the site by tractor. The historic parking of cars on the grass and along the road, when the crematorium is busy, is chaotic and can be distressing for visitors to the crematorium.

"The additional car parking proposed, on the location of the existing grass parking area, plus the additional disabled parking area between the existing car park and the crematorium buildings, will provide a greater range of all-weather parking opportunities on the site."

The new spaces will be split over two separate car parks.

Ms Flower said: "The proposed car parks will provide an additional nine disabled parking bays and a further 37 all-weather standard parking spaces providing a new total parking provision of 106 permanent spaces.

"The new parking provision is to be provided by two separate areas. The first is located to the north of the main entrance in the location of the existing over flow parking area. The second is located between the existing car park and the main Crematorium building."

The decision will be made by Telford & Wrekin Council in the coming months.
