Opera singer Russell Watson to star in Telford show
Opera superstar Russell Watson is to stage a concert in Telford as part of the town and Oakengates Theatre's 50th anniversary celebrations.
The tenor will perform on August 4 and tickets went on sale this morning.
Other stars to take part in next year's celebrations include comedians Dara O'Brien and Al Murray, Westlife's Brian McFadden and Boyzone's Keith Duffy.
There will also be a concert from Britain's Got Talent winners Collabro.
To mark the theatre’s landmark birthday, it is moving to the QEII Fields In Trust Town Park Arena between August 4 and 19 to showcase an extravaganza of entertainment.
Tickets for more shows are set to go on sale in the coming days.
Councillor Shaun Davies, leader of Telford & Wrekin Council, said: “I am delighted that we are able to announce such a varied range of acts for The Place In The Park.
“This will be a fabulous way of celebrating both Telford’s and the theatre’s 50th birthdays and there is something for everyone during the course of the run of events.
“We are putting the acts on sale in early December as tickets will make great Christmas presents for loved ones.”
Tomorrow will see tickets for a performance of Scheherazade and 1001 Nights, set to take place on August 5.
On August 6 there will be a Sounds of the 60s show, with a Supersonic 70s concert taking place on August 7. Both performances will go on sale on Monday.
Dara O'Brien is expected to fill the QUII Fields when he performs on August 8, with tickets set to go on sale on Tuesday.
He will be followed by an 80s Mania show on August 9. Tickets will be available to purchase on Monday.
Boyzlife will perform on August 10, with tickets set to be released on Wednesday.
Al Murray's show will tickets are set to go on sale on Thursday for a August 10 performance.
Collabro round out the announced shows, and will perform on August 16. Tickets will go on sale on December 8.
More shows for the "extravaganza of entertainment" are set to be announced in the coming months.
The concerts will be part of a year of new or enhanced events to mark the anniversary.
Other events will include a Festival of Telford Giants, a specially commissioned pantomime about the town and a Japanese influenced Sakura Festival.
The annual Kite Festival will turn into a “Kite and Flight” Festival and, for the first time in many years, is set to include Hot Air Balloons.
