Members of Telford & District Amateur Radio Society set up a special radio station, call sign GB17YOTA - "Youngsters on the Air" - to transmit to the world from the village hall.

Martyn Vincent of the society said: "It was well supported by members, with no less than 15 attending for part or all of the chosen day.

"Conditions on shortwave were poor, and activity on the bands was low, but about 36 contacts were made.

"In the nearby field, a mobile mast supported two separate antennas. At the other end of the electromagnetic spectrum, nanowaves - red light - was used for speech and a slow scan TV contact across the meeting hall."

Among other activities were making a cardboard megaphone, operating a transceiver remotely with a Raspberry Pi and tablet, reception of data from various satellites using a laptop plug-in "dongle", a morse sending and receiving stand and an ancient field telephone link down the hall.

"A great time was had by all Telford radio club members and visitors present, and various ideas for the future were discussed."
