Holidaymakers from Shropshire are among those who have signed a petition to ensure emergency access is maintained to a popular Welsh coast campsite.

A petition launched by the owners of Shell Island has gathered 28,000 signatures

A 28,000 signature petition has been delivered to the Welsh Government by the owners of Shell Island, a spit of land between Barmouth and Harlech.

The public access across a causeway is cut off by the sea at high tide.

Owners of the campsite say they fear that the takeover of an adjacent airbase by a commercial company could see it lose its emergency access over that company's land.

Snowdonia Aerospace has denied the suggestion.

It said in a statement: "We have not prevented or stopped any emergency access sought by the Emergency Services at any time over the airfield.

"We have continued to allow any Emergency Services access across the Airfield as required, despite the previous Shell Island lease which was in place granting such access expiring and no formal approach being made by Shell Island to seek to renew this original long standing agreement. "

"We continue to work with the Emergency Service direct to ensure a safe and controlled access across the airfield as and when required."
