Shropshire weather: Snow and freezing temperatures as 'Beast from the East' hits county - with more to come
Schools closed, a football match was postponed and motorists were warned to take extra care as snow covered the ground in Shropshire and Mid Wales today – with an amber warning for further potentially heavy snow later in the week.
Shropshire woke to snow as a blast of cold weather dubbed the “Beast from the East” hit the UK.
The Met Office has weather warnings in place for the county until Saturday.
The Met Office said: “There is the potential for travel delays on roads, with some stranded vehicles and passengers, as well as delays or cancellations to rail and air travel.
“Some rural communities could become cut off. Power cuts may also occur and other services, such as mobile phones, may be affected.”
Llanfyllin High School in Powys closed early at 2pm. Ysgol Meifod school in Meifod and Ysgol Rhiw-Bechan school in Tregynon both closed due to adverse weather.
A woman was injured and a road near Oswestry was closed after a car crashed in the snowy conditions.
Shrewsbury's Quarry Play Area has been closed until further notice because of the weather.
Arriva Midlands also warned people to keep an eye on its Facebook and Twitter pages for updates in case of any weather related disruption.
Eve Marie Ginever, spokeswoman for the bus operator, said: “We remain committed to running our full timetable whilst it remains safe to do so, however we will assess road conditions on an ongoing basis in line with localised weather warnings and make any necessary operational decisions in the best interest of our customers and other road users. We will continue to update our Facebook and Twitter pages as the situation alters.”
Council gritting teams were also in action in Shropshire as the weather front swept in from Russia.
The Met Office predicts highs of 0C (32F) tomorrow in the county and lows of -6C (21.2F).
However, temperatures in Shawbury could plummet even further tomorrow.
The village recorded a temperature of -13C in December and Alex Burkill, meteorologist for the Met Office, said tonight could be heading in the same direction.
He said: “It will possibly be slightly colder and the best chance of getting into negative double figures.
“Show showers are likely during the morning and I wouldn’t be surprised if temperatures in Shawbury stayed below zero.”
According to The Met Office, Wednesday is forecast to start largely dry, however further snow showers are likely by late morning.
There is expected to be little change towards the end of the week, however gales are predicted tomorrow and Friday.
The Met Office said winds are predicted to ease into Saturday, with fewer showers likely too.
