The 23-year-old special constable had to have his lower right leg amputated after he was hit by a second car while helping someone on the side of the M42.

The crash happened on March 9, and in the weeks since his friends and family have gathered together to try and raise as much money as possible to help support him during a difficult time.

Ben, from Droitwich, had been driving along the motorway when he saw a car had crashed into the central reservation.

Although he was off-duty, he saw the driver was still in the other car and got out to help.

But when he went to fetch tools from his boot, he was hit by a passing car and thrown into the carriageway.

Members of the public rushed to his aid and he was taken to Birmingham’s Queen Elizabeth Hospital, where he remains in a stable condition.

Surgery

He has had his first round of surgery, but more will be needed in the coming weeks and months.

Adam Court, a close friend of Ben, set up the JustGiving page, which has raised about £1,500.

He said: “Ben is a special constable with West Mercia Police, and is renowned for going that extra mile to provide support to his colleagues, friends, family and - as this incident shows – random strangers in need.

“He has undergone an initial round of surgery and has began his long road to recovery.

“Funds raised will go to supporting Ben and his family adapt and provide financial support in his hour of need.”

Senior police figures have added their voices to those backing Ben and his family.

West Mercia Police and Crime Commissioner John Campion said: “My thoughts are with Ben and his family, and I wish him well with his recuperation.

Dangers

“He acted selflessly, facing potential dangers, in order to help others; yet another example of the work of our volunteers, which I always find so very humbling. As part of my behind the badge campaign, I am calling for people to see the person behind the uniform and this is an outstanding example of someone going above and beyond to help others”

West Mercia Assistant Chief Constable Martin Evans said: “Ben acted to protect people from harm and his selfless actions are a credit to the force. He has paid a high price for going to the public’s aid and our thoughts are with him and his family. “

Others including Special Chief Officer Nick Marlow have praised Ben’s dedication and selflessness. Ben said he was “blown away by the kindness and support received. My biggest worries is not being able to go on duty again after my injury as I love it so much.”
