Ellesmere sink hole repair work to take place next week
Investigations have revealed a sink hole that has trapped some residents in their properties was caused by a leaking highway drain.
Last week a sink hole opened up on a pavement on Watergate Street in Ellesmere, stopping some residents from getting the cars out.
Shropshire Council highways team were out inspecting the work as residents waited for answers to see how serious the problem was.
The road, which is a one way street into the town centre was closed off, and now the council have confirmed work is set to take place to repair the damage road and pavement.
Work with contractors will begin in Monday and the authority is hoping the road will re-open later in the week.
Shropshire Council spokesman Gareth Proffitt said: "Shropshire Council closed Watergate Street for safety reasons last Friday following reports that a hole had appeared in the pavement.
"Council officers have since carried out preliminary checks and visited the site again this morning with a structural engineer from WSP the council’s engineering consultant, and a representative from Kier the council’s highways maintenance contractor, to determine the best way forward.
"We suspect the hole was caused by a leaking highway drain, and some utility ducting which we’re still investigating.
"We’ll now be returning on Monday to begin repair work, and estimate that this may take two to three days. Once this work is completed the road will then be reopened."
Earlier in the week residents expressed fears the sink hole could collapse onto a gas main and cause major disruption to the area.
