Pupils at Llanfyllin High School were sitting exams when the decision was made to evacuate the building, and Mid and West Wales Fire Service were called.

The fire service were called at 10.47am, and firefighters discovered the holder was on fire and made the area and building safe before the stop message was given at 12.10pm.

On Facebook, the high school posted saying that lessons were back to normal in the afternoon, and special consideration would be given to those who had to leave their exams.

The school said: "There was an interruption to the exams as the whole school was evacuated and could only be let back once the fire service gave the go ahead.

"Regulations set out by JCQ/Exam Board for these scenarios were followed and the relevant exams boards will have been contacted to make them aware so that 'special consideration' will be applied when marking the papers.

"All students sitting exams this morning would have been given the full time allocated to sit the paper."
