Shropshire Regimental Museum curator leaving for Gurkha role
Christine Bernath, who has been curator of Shropshire Regimental Museum for four years, is leaving to take up a new post as assistant director of The Gurkha Museum.
Christine arrived at the Shropshire museum, based in Shrewsbury Castle, in the spring of 2014 and made history as its first female curator. She takes up her new role in Winchester in August.
"It has been a very rewarding job, particularly as these last four years have coincided with the First World War centenary commemorations," she said.
"I have been fortunate enough to work on some wonderful projects that have ensured that the contributions and sacrifices made by the men and women of Shropshire are being remembered by the local community and will continue to be passed down to the next generation.
"Since joining the SRM I have had the privilege of working with some fantastic individuals and organisations across the county, who have all been incredibly supportive of both me and the museum.
"One of my aims upon taking on the role of curator was to broaden the reach of the museum, which wouldn’t have been possible without partnership working.
"I will be joining the Gurkha Museum Trust at an exciting time as they look towards developing their museum and becoming a more resilient organisation in the face of the increasing financial pressure that is currently threatening all regimental collections.
"Having recently seen the SRM through its loss of Ministry of Defence funding, and setting it on a course towards becoming a better visitor attraction, I am confident that it will continue to prosper under the guidance of a new curator.
"I will be sorry to leave the museum and all the wonderful partnerships I have built up over the last four years, but look forward to the new and exciting challenges that await me in Winchester."
Before coming to Shropshire Christine worked for the Black Watch Museum in Perth, Scotland. Her successor at Shropshire Regimental Museum is yet to be announced.
