Tree crashes onto car in Shrewsbury as wind and rain to batter Shropshire again
The driver of this car escaped without injury after a tree crashed down to it in Shrewsbury - with more wind and rain expected to batter Shropshire this weekend.
It happened in Ellesmere Road and police reported the woman driver was shocked but uninjured. Local residents who helped cut back the tree and clear the road were praised by officers who tweeted:
"On Ellesmere Rd, Shrewsbury yesterday afternoon a fallen tree landed on a moving vehicle, the lady driver was absolutely fine other than a little shocked. Local residents cut back and cleared the road whilst PCSO Edwards directed traffic.. #CommunitySpirit."
Meanwhile, one of Oswestry's most popular events has been cancelled due to the weather.
Oswestry Community Games held a emergency working group meeting last night and a decision was made to cancel tomorrow's event, which brings hundreds of people to the town.
Organisers said the decision has been made due to public safety and the state of the grass in Cae Glas Park.
Organiser Clive Knight said: "Very sorry about the decision, but best we all stay safe."
Next year's event will be held on September 22.
The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning and said tomorrow will be ‘particularly wet’ and ‘very blustery’.
Rain approaching from the South West is expected to hit the region around lunchtime today and will stick around over the weekend, worsening tomorrow.
A spokesman for the Met Office said: “Rainfall will increase but once it comes through it will be slow moving as it gradually moves north and east.
“Overnight and heading into tomorrow, the rain will continue and we could see the rain possibly intensify so tomorrow will be particularly wet.
“The yellow weather warning is in force due to rain reaching between 20 to 30mm.
“We could see around 50mm and we’re in a situation where surface flooding is possible. It will be a very blustery day.”
Bright and clear conditions are set to return to the region on Monday, with bright, clear skies which will extend into Tuesday and Wednesday.
Heavy rain caused flooding across Shropshire yesterday after Storm Bronagh battered the county. Floods were reported in Shrewsbury and Newport.
