Man arrested on suspicion of sexual assault
Police have launched an investigation after a man was arrested on suspicion of sexual assault.
Dyfed-Powys Police is investigating the report of a serious sexual assault which happened at the canal patch on Canal Road in Newtown on Monday evening.
A man has been arrested and remains in police custody.
Officers are now appealing to anyone who was walking along that path between 8pm and 11pm to come forward.
Detective sergeant Andy Evans said: “A man is in custody helping us with our enquiries but we need to build a clearer picture of what happened
“We know this path is popular with walkers, dog walkers and joggers and are appealing for anyone who was there between 8pm and 11pm, particularly between the Halfpenny Bridge and Llanllwchaiarn stretch, to speak to us.
“We are treating this extremely seriously. The victim is being supported by specialists.
“Local residents can expect to see an increased police presence today, as specialist search teams and house-to-house officers carry out their investigations.”
