A member of the public posed a question to the Great Outdoors Strategy Board, mentioning Network Rail's proposals to close crossings in other areas of the country, such as Essex, Norfolk and Suffolk, and asked if it was going to set a precedent for Shropshire.

Council officer Shona Butter said: "We have a very different relationship in Shropshire thankfully.

"To date we haven't had any large scale closures of our crossings, we would resist large scale closures but we would want to work with them to find solutions if possible.

"I don't think we have a problem."

Councillor Peter Carr said any large scale closure would have "quite a disastrous impact".

Network Rail has developed proposals to manage the potential closure or change of use of about 130 level crossings across Cambridgeshire, Suffolk, Essex, Havering, Hertfordshire, Southend and Thurrock.
