Student aims for armed forces adventure
A teenager aspiring to join the armed forces is looking forward to the end of lock down so she can pursue her dream.
Abby Andrews, 17, is studying public uniformed services at Telford College after initially enrolling to study childcare. She is now in her second year and say's that switching courses was good move for her.
In addition to her studies, she has also enjoyed a summer stint with the National Citizenship Service which included a residential trip which aimed to show teens how to work together as a team, volunteer with a community group and as well as offering outdoor adventure experiences.
Abby, a former Telford Langley School pupil says: “I’m happy I made the transfer. The practical challenges on this course have been incredible - we get to meet personnel from all of the services who give us career advice and help us to make the right decision about our futures.
“The best part for me is the physical training and all the trips we had chance to go on, before lock down. I love keeping fit and improving myself.”
“Next year I am coming back to college to complete the level three second year, and then hopefully progress into a career within the services.
“I’m not 100 per cent sure which direction I want to go in yet, but I’m sure I’ll know once I finish level three.”
She adds: “Whilst doing this course I have learned to never under estimate myself, and to always push as hard as I can.
“My tutors are all former service personnel, and they’ve experienced what it’s like. That means they can give every student a real taste of what to expect when you start your career.
“Even if you’re not seeking a career in the services, this course is good for team working, communication and management skills, which are necessary in all careers.”
Telford College public uniformed services tutor Archie Walkerdine says: “Abby has developed her confidence throughout the year and has developed into an excellent student.
“She works hard in her physical sessions as well as producing written work to a good standard.
“Abby is an excellent role model to other students with a real ‘can do’ attitude who's not afraid to get stuck into any challenge - an excellent quality to have within the public uniformed services.”
