New figures from NHS England show that tens of thousands of patients were waiting for routine treatment at Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital in May.

It comes after junior doctors walked out last Thursday as part of five days of industrial action – amid record waiting lists across England.

NHS England figures show 35,615 patients were waiting for non-urgent elective operations or treatment at Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust at the end of May – down from 36,043 in April, but an increase on 34,655 in May 2022. Of those, 2,636 (7 per cent) had been waiting for longer than a year.

The median waiting time from referral at an NHS Trust to treatment at Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital was 16 weeks at the end of May – the same as in April.

Separate figures show 1.6 million patients in England were waiting for a key diagnostic test in May – the same as in April.

At Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital, 11,879 patients were waiting for one of 12 standard tests, such as an MRI scan, non-obstetric ultrasound or gastroscopy at this time. Of them, 4,305 (36 per cent) had been waiting for at least six weeks.

Other figures show cancer patients at Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital are not being seen quickly enough.
