Several furious residents have posted pictures of empty bowls and Ring doorbell footage of sweetie thieves on community social media pages, enraged that the festivities have been spoiled for local youngsters, all dressed up in their spooky costumes and looking forward to an evening of fun.
Marcus Watkin posted in the Greenfields Community Facebook page in Shrewsbury, saying: “I wouldn’t put all your treats out at the same time tonight. There’s several groups just driving around and clearing people’s tubs of sweets. Absolutely no shame, adults included - not just the kids doing it.”
In the Ellesmere Community Group, Gail Nixon posted: “To the teens that have stolen the full tub of sweets that was left for the trick or treaters, you have spoiled it for the little ones. And furthermore, you are on camera. Do the decent thing and bring them back.”
A Hanwood resident also posted doorbell footage of a young man in a Givenchy jumper emptying an entire bowl of sweets into a rucksack and brazenly walking off. The resident wrote on a Shrewsbury Facebook group: “Had this person in Hanwood rob all the sweets outside my house. Would like to know who it is.”
Several other social media users were disgusted, commenting: “What a nasty lowlife,” “scumbag”, and “how horrible!”
Other Halloween horrors included youths smashing pumpkins in Meole Brace, Shrewsbury according to a member of the Meole Village Community Group.
West Mercia Police said beforehand that they would be having an increased presence throughout the evening.
Superintendent Brian Gibbs said: “As ever, we will have an increased police presence throughout the evening during Halloween with officers carrying out high visibility patrols in key areas to ensure those who are out and about can enjoy Halloween safely.“If anyone does have any concerns while they are out trick or treating, whether it be anti-social or suspicious behaviour then I would encourage them to report this to us via our website Report A Crime.
