The council is introducing a system where bookings have to be made for a slot at the recycling centres across Shropshire.

The new system does not include the Telford & Wrekin Council area although Telford residents can book to use sites in the Shropshire Council area.

“If you want to visit one of our recycling centres from Monday (Nov 4) you'll need to book a slot,” said a spokesperson for the council on Sunday.

“Bookings can be made up to six days in advance, by all residents living in the Shropshire Council and Telford & Wrekin Council areas.”

Bookings can be made for cars, and for vans/trailers. Fifteen-minute slots are available for cars, with 30-minute slots (or 60 minutes at weekends) for vans/trailers.

The council insists that the booking system 'will save us money' by reducing the cost of disposing of trade waste, non-recyclable waste and waste from outside Shropshire.

They add that it will also “help to reduce congestion and queuing times, increase recycling as centre staff will be able to better engage with visitors, and reduce the amount of trade waste taken to the centres.”

It is also claimed that there is no evidence that recycling centre booking systems lead to an increase in fly-tipping.

Angry responses as Shropshire Council introduces a booking system for local tips

Responses on social media have been overwhelmingly angry at the prospect.

Natalie Carr and Becky Ray both say that 'no one wants this' while Becky Ray adds that she'd like to “see the results of the survey.”

Others say that they have not seen congestion at the recycling sites.

Alun Roberts said: “There is no congestion at Oswestry site.

“The only reason I can see this being introduced is so you can monitor who is going to the tip.”

Austin Hayward asks “And how much has it cost for the Portakabin and pointless barrier you've installed at Whitchurch, just to monitor if someone has booked in or not?”

While Dickie Allen uses the site at Craven Arms ans has “never seen a queue.

“Staff there work hard and efficiently, it's the goons in the offices that have dreamt this ridiculous scheme to frustrate people and make the disposal of rubbish more difficult.”
