The Castlefields Yarn Bombing Crew in Shrewsbury have been hard at work, preparing more than 1,000 hand-made poppies to go on display at St Chad’s Church.

Their work is likely to be seen by thousands, including many visiting the Quarry next Sunday, November 10 for the Remembrance Sunday service.

Annie Barham, from The Castlefields Yarn Bombing Crew, said: “We were approached by the church and of course we said yes. Then we realised how many we needed!

“We lost count (of how many we’d made) after about 1,000. We’ve had an army of people knitting and crocheting, then another army sewing them onto the netting.”The group has been working on the project for around a month, and it took about four hours to carefully hang their work up on the pillars of St Chad’s so as to not damage the Grade I-listed church.

Around 20 to 25 knitters and crocheters helped make the poppies.

“The church has been wanting to do it for ages so it’s been nice to be able to help out,” Annie added, also saying their next project it “top secret”.
