National Highways is carrying out safety improvements and essential maintenance along a stretch of the A49 .

To minimise disruption, a series of works are being carried out at the same time including replacing the signage to ensure road users are better informed of the road layout, and that the bends and junctions are signed throughout.

In addition, there will be the renewal of road markings and new traffic bollards installed along the stretch with road resurfacing at Dinmore Hill.

This scheme aims to improve safety for all road users by reducing the number of people harmed on the region’s roads.

The work will be carried out in phases, between Woofferton and Llandinabo, to further reduce the impact of the work and road closures where possible.

Beginning on Monday November 18, the scheme is expected to be completed in spring next year.

To ensure the safety of road workers and road users, overnight road closures will be needed. These will take place Monday to Friday, 8pm to 6am, as follows:

  • 18 November to 9 December - A49 closed between A49/A4137 and A49/Grafton Lane

  • 10 December to 17 January - A49 closed between A49/A456 Woofferton and A49/A4112 Stockton

  • 20 January to 27 January - A49 closed between A49/A4112 Stockton and A49/Leominster Bypass roundabout

  • 28 January to 31 January - A49 closed between A49/A44 Worcester Road roundabout and A49/A417 Hope under Dinmore

  • 3 February to 19 March - A49 closed between A49/A417 Hope under Dinmore and A49/A4103 Roman Road (Starting Gate roundabout)

National Highways Project Manager, Thomas Williams, said: “Safety is always our priority and this work will mean safer and smoother journeys. But we appreciate that any roadworks can be disruptive and we’re doing all we can to reduce the impact of this scheme on drivers and local people.

“We are carrying out the work at night when we know traffic numbers are lower and avoiding weekends. We will also pause the works over the Christmas period.

“By completing the work in phases we can reduce the number of people impacted by the work at any one time. We will also make every effort to manage noise levels and limit lighting.”

During closures, a fully signed diversion route, agreed with the local authority, will be in place. More information can be found here:

Access to frontages within the closures will be maintained.
