Newport's Rotary Club has begun to plan its annual Tree of Light appeal and is hoping it will receive as much support as in previous years.

For over ten years, the Tree of Light is illuminated in the grounds of St Nicholas Church, with people able to sponsor a light to commemorate a loved one.

The money raised is divided between Newport Town Council's mayor's charity - this year, 'Dementia Friendly Newport' and the Rotary Club of Newport's Benevolent Fund.

The Benevolent Fund has supported grants to individuals and small volunteer groups in local communities and to wider international communities and disaster relief.

A minimum donation of £5 will sponsor a light on the Town’s Christmas tree, which will be illuminated with white memorial lights when the town’s Christmas lights are switched on Friday, November 22.

The names of loved ones remembered will be printed in the Newport Advertiser and also a memorial book will be displayed in the Town Library early in the new year.
