Llandrindod Wells Community Fridge held a highly successful "Eat Your Pumpkin" event at Ysgol Trefonnen recently.

It brought together over 70 community members for a festive day of pumpkin carving, delicious food, and sustainability awareness.

Designed to celebrate the Halloween spirit while raising awareness of food waste reduction, the event encouraged local families to see the value in using food resources wisely.

Attendees of all ages participated in the main attraction - pumpkin carving and decorating. Children and adults alike showcased their creativity, competing for the best designs.

The contest was judged by Councillor Jake Berriman, who selected the top carvings and presented prizes to the winning adult and child.

Trefonnen Familiy Liaison officer Jen Craven said; “An important aspect of the "Eat Your Pumpkin" event was its emphasis on preventing food waste. Once the carving was done, participants enjoyed a hearty serving of pumpkin soup. Not only was the soup warmly received by attendees, but it also demonstrated how easily food often considered "waste" can be turned into something delicious and nutritious.

“The experience showed guests a practical example of how to make the most of their food resources.

“To further reduce waste, attendees were provided with food bags containing pumpkin leftovers to take home, along with recipe ideas to inspire creativity in the kitchen.

“This initiative aimed to empower participants to use seasonal produce more effectively, reinforcing the Community Fridge's message of sustainability and food waste reduction.”

This emphasis on mindful food usage comes at a critical time. Around 9.4 million tonnes of food are wasted annually in the UK, while approximately 8.4 million people struggle with food insecurity.

By promoting sustainable practices and offering free, surplus food to those who need it, the Llandrindod Wells Community Fridge plays a crucial role in tackling these issues.

The Community Fridge collects surplus food close to its sell-by date from Tesco and Asda twice weekly, redistributing it to local residents. For many in the current cost-of-living crisis, the fridge has become a vital resource, with some visitors sharing that they "wouldn't know what they'd do" without its support.

The event also strengthened the bonds within the local community. Many residents expressed their appreciation for an opportunity to come together, socialise, and learn about sustainable cooking.

Parents and children enjoyed a fun, hands-on experience that taught valuable lessons on reducing waste, while reducing the feeling of isolation that can often affect individuals within a community. By offering an inclusive and engaging environment, the "Eat Your Pumpkin" event not only focused on food but on fostering community spirit and support.

Llandrindod Wells Community Fridge plans to continue building on this success by hosting additional activities that educate and empower residents to embrace sustainable living. Upcoming projects include recipe-sharing sessions, "cooking on a budget" workshops, and more free community meals.

Llandrindod Wells Community Fridge’s next event  will be a Community Christmas Dinner on December 21.

Open to everyone and free of charge, this festive meal aims to bring warmth and holiday cheer to residents of all ages.

Jen added: “As with all Community Fridge events, the Christmas Dinner will provide an opportunity for local residents to come together, enjoy a delicious meal, and celebrate the season with friends and neighbours. We look forward to welcoming everyone and spreading the joy of the festive season in a truly inclusive community setting.”
