For the last four weeks, preparations have been under way for the return of the Donnington Bonfire, known affectionately by some locals as the 'Donny Bonny'.

The annual sight of the wooden pallets stacked high in the Donnington field has been a familiar autumnal presence.

Last year, a huge community effort took place to save the popular event, after a group of what appeared to be youths set fire to the huge pile of pallets just one week before the big day.

But there has been sign of trouble ahead of this year's event, which has been organised by the Mitchell family and their friends for the last four decades.

Mark Mitchell began helping put on the bonfire extravaganza with his dad when he was just 12. And he says this year's event is set to be one of the best year, thanks to recent dry weather.

He said: “It's been going in the family for 39 years. This year we have the funfair, which is the largest one-day funfair in Great Britain.

"There will be plenty of onsite food but we advise people to get here early to avoid big queues.”

He said the first fireworks blast off at 7pm, while the bonfire is lit at 8pm ahead of the night's grand finale at 8.45pm.

“It is set to be another great event,” said Mark. “The ground is solid, no mud whatsover, so there's no need for Wellingtons.”

The gates open at 4pm, with tickets priced at £3. Those under 1m tall enter for free.

Wellington Road will be closed from 3.30pm to 10pm, with diversions in place.
