The Shropshire Star recently gauged residents' views on 'Silent Crime' through a survey that has also been used across the UK.

From the responses, 64.7 per cent of people said they had witnessed a crime in the last 12 months, but decided not to report it to the police.

Those who said they had in the survey were then asked to say what crime it was.

Common responses included theft and shoplifting, and drug offences. Meanwhile, others reported witnessing anti-social behaviour, speeding and driving offences, fly-tipping, criminal damage, and public indecency.

They were also asked their reasons for not reporting the crime.

One response said reporting the crime would be a "waste of time as there was no CCTV and police are not interested".

Meanwhile, other responses included: "Police in Shropshire are not interested in investigating any minor crimes", and "police don’t ever come out when it’s reported so no-one reports it any more".
