Donations made to the tree outside Morrisons that is organised by Market Drayton Rotary will go towards two children's charities - Hope House Children’s Hospice and Mary’s Meals.

Residents can dedicate a light on the tree and make a donation to the charities by completing and returning sponsorship forms. These can be found and returned to the Morrisons customer service desk, Market Drayton Library and the Town Hall.

Donations can be made from Remembrance Day and the first display will be in place after the North Shropshire town's Christmas lights switch-on event on November 16, and will be regularly updated until Christmas.

The Rotary Club is also providing Santa's grotto at the Festival of Lights event.

A representative for the Rotary said: "Christmas is a time for families and a time for charity. The Tree of Lights serves both as a symbol of Christmas and as a positive focus to honour precious memories of loved ones who are no longer with us.

"It is something that can bring comfort to people who have lost friends and family members and a chance to do something positive in their memory."

Sponsorship forms are also available on Market Drayton Rotary website www.rotarymd.co.uk.
