Newport will be switching on its Christmas lights on Friday, November 22, with entertainment taking place between 5pm and 8pm. This includes a lantern parade, a fun fair, Santa and his reindeer and the big switch-on.

However, one member of the public is not happy that live animals will be used. In a letter shared by Newport Town Council ahead of its meeting on Wednesday evening (November 13), the resident said that people are becoming more aware of the animal welfare issues associated with using live deer in such events.

“Last year, 44 events that previously used animals began hosting deer-free events with much success,” it reads.

“Since 2018, at least 153 events have ceased using deer. The unnatural environment, inability to exhibit natural behaviour, constant and unpredictable interactions, long-distance travel, repeated loading and unloading, and the stress of pulling Santa’s sleigh all contribute to the well-documented distress, fear and mental fatigue of these unconsenting animals.

“Transportation and event events themselves can also compromise their immune systems, making them more susceptible to disease and infection. All of this suffering is needless.

“A recent report highlights the detrimental effects these events have on deer welfare. Dr Tayla Hammond, a researcher in animal welfare and behaviour, concludes in the report that such events should be discontinued due to the significant welfare concerns identified.

“Veterinarians across the UK have long expressed concerns about the suitability of deer for captivity. Common issues include poor body weight, weight loss, and muscle atrophy.

“Given the welfare concerns and the move away from the use of deer by many events, I kindly ask that you also reconsider your decision to display these animals. No reindeer should suffer for festive entertainment.”

Councillors will discuss the letter at its meeting at The Hub on Wednesday, November 13.
