Pupils at John Fletcher of Madeley Primary School attended a rededication ceremony for the 'Nine Men of Madeley' after learning in history lessons about their tragic deaths.

On Monday the children joined a ceremony at St Michael's Church in Madeley to remember the miners who fell to their deaths 160 years ago.

A memorial plaque at the graves has recently been refurbished.

On September 27 of 1864, nine miners - six of them just boys - in Madeley jumped on a chain to "ride the double" 720 feet back up into daylight after a hard day in the pit.

Sadly, they never made it back to the surface.
