Rhayader councillors are investigating the cost of creating a car park before deciding whether to go ahead.
A group of councillors will obtain costings to create a proper car park in Rhayader before the full council will make a final decision on whether to go ahead.
Rhayader Town Council received a quote of £15,560 + VAT to repair, resurface and put in kerbing at Triangle car park in Cwmdauddwr.
But members said they would need further quotes and to see a plan to ensure it covers everything they would want.
There are several different views amongst councillors with some saying commercial vehicles should be banned from it and there should be no overnight parking and it should not be re-surfaced, while others feel it should be re-surfaced and turned into a proper car park.
Rhayader Mayor Councillor Clare Evans said her view is that they would only pay to re-surface the car park if there was some money in it for the council and it would then pay for itself. She said another option would be just to repair it for a smaller amount of money.
Councillor Rhys Thomas reminded members that the idea came up after the town council received complaints that there was no available parking spaces because commercial vehicles were parked there.
Local people and visitors use the car park said Councillor Clive Hamer and he said he did not think people would change because they thought the car park was given to the town.
Members agreed that a task and finish group of councillors should obtain full costings to create a proper car park and then bring it back to the full council for a final decision.
