Firefighters scrambled to Oswestry house after 'embers and flames' seen coming from chimney pot

Firefighters moved quickly to extinguish a chimney fire at an Oswestry property.

The Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service received a call at 5.54pm on Monday reporting the incident at a property on York Street.

One fire crew was sent from Oswestry Fire Station to the scene. Crews discovered a fire coming from the chimney pot and worked quickly to extinguish it using chimney rods and water.

Firefighters returned to the property at 10pm for an inspection to make sure the scene was safe.

Oswestry Fire Station posted on Facebook a picture of their vehicle in snowy conditions and warned residents to stay safe when travelling. 

The post said: "This evening (Monday) at 5.55pm Oswestry firefighters were mobilised to reports of a chimney fire in York Street, Oswestry.

"On arrival crews could see embers and flames coming from the chimney pot. Crews used chimney rods and water to extinguish the fire quickly. 

"At 10pm Oswestry firefighters returned to complete a re-inspection to make sure there were no remaining hotspots.

"Roads are now becoming very slippy due to untreated surfaces. Please take extra care and time if you have to travel during this episode of snow."
