Cash-strapped council's finances still show multi-million pound shortfall - and reliance on big car park sales

Shropshire Council's cabinet member in charge of finance, Councillor Gwilym Butler, delivered a report on the latest position at today's cabinet meeting.
He told members that the authority is currently predicting it will finish the financial year £35.1m over budget.
The estimate is the 'most likely' outcome, according to Councillor Butler, although a best case outcome could see that overspend reduced to £19.7m - but a worst-case scenario could see it balloon to £74.6m.
The meeting was told that the sale of council assets - including its car parks, as agreed earlier this year, is being factored into the plans to generate £34m for the council.
If those plans are not realised then the total would potentially be added to the predicted £35.1m overspend.
