Councillor David Vasmer (Lib Dem), who represents Underdale, raised the suggestion during this week’s Cabinet meeting at Shirehall.

“During the recent Armistice commemoration which is traditionally held in Shrewsbury’s Market Square, it was suggested by the current President of the British Legion that a brass plaque be inserted into the pavement as a reminder of Armistice Day being commemorated every year,” said Councillor  Vasmer.

“It would also act as a marker for the location of the commemoration event.”

Councillor Dan Morris, who is the portfolio holder for highways, said the council has no objection to the insertion of a plaque, provided that the groups mentioned raise the necessary funds and have the plaque produced.

“If the plaque is to be placed within the York paving stones in the Square and not attached to any building, it would fall under the scope of highways permitted development rights and would not require any planningpermissions,” said Councillor Morris.

“The historic environment team can advise on the design and siting of the plaque to ensure it is appropriate for this sensitive location in the conservation area. In principle, there would be no objection in this respect.”
