National Highways reported the A49 was closed in both directions between Church Stretton and Holmer at around 10.40am on Sunday.

They said that traffic was being diverted and equipment to deal with the incident was on its way.

At around 4pm, National Highways confirmed that the road closure points had been moved, and the A49 was now closed between the A4117 near Ludlow and the A4103 in Holmer.

A spokesperson for National Highways West Midlands said: "If you're heading A49 please be aware the road is closed in both directions between B4371 Church Stretton and  A4103 Holmer due to significant flooding.

"Equipment to clear the floodwater is en route. Traffic being diverted locally."

Nearby, flooding also closed the A456 at Woofferton and a fallen tree has reportedly blocked the A488 Ffrydd Road both ways from Monaughty to Knighton.

Elsewhere in the county, preparations were underway to deal with the aftermath of Storm Bert.
