The cameras are in place at five schools for Shropshire Council's 'School Streets' programme - brought in to improve safety for children heading to and from school.

They mean that drivers entering the 'school streets' zone during certain times without a permit, now risk a fine of £70 - or £35 if paid within 21 days.

The scheme, which is in place at Market Drayton Junior School, Gobowen Primary School, Woodside Primary School in Oswestry, Mereside Primary School in Shrewsbury, and Whitchurch Junior School, began earlier this year.

But it is only now that the automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) cameras set up to enforce the measures are going live.

A post from Shropshire Council on social media explained that those breaking the rules could now be fined.

It said: "In June this year a School Streets pilot began at five Shropshire primary schools.

"This means there are temporary restrictions on motorised traffic (except for permit holders) during school drop-off and pick-up times – to help ensure the safety of children travelling to and from school.

"The ANPR enforcement cameras used to monitor vehicles entering the School Streets zone are being switched on from this week - and drivers entering the School Streets zone without a permit may now receive a fine (Penalty Charge Notice ) of £70 - or £35 if paid within 21 days."
