Keiran Cook, 24 and of Wednesfield, pleaded guilty to charges of perverting the course of justice and dangerous driving when he appeared at Shrewsbury Crown Court.
The charges related to what Judge Anthony Lowe described as 'lunatic' driving from the Darlaston FC player in the early hours of December 23 last year - and his efforts to escape justice.
Nigel Tatlow, prosecuting, told the court that police had been alerted to a VW Golf driven by Cook in Shrewsbury at around 3.15am.
They had started following the vehicle and activated their blue lights when it was driving on the A5 towards Telford.
Mr Tatlow said Cook, who had two passengers in the car, then sped off, through a red light, driving at speeds of up to 140mph on the dual carriageway.
The court heard that the incident also took place in torrential rain, with the conditions described as "terrible".
Mr Tatlow said that Cook had pulled off the dual carriageway onto a 30mph road where he continued to speed at up to 80mph in his efforts to evade police.
The court was told that officers were about to use a 'stinger' device to puncture the vehicle's tyres, but Cook performed a U-turn, went the wrong way around a roundabout, and drove on the wrong side of the road.
