The way in which rights of way volunteers in Herefordshire are engaged is changing, Kington Town Council has been told.

Town clerk Liz Kelso said Herefordshire Council had recently brought the service back in-house and has introduced a new system for engaging public rights of way volunteers.

She said one of the concerns raised is that parish footpaths officers now will need to be transferred to Herefordshire Council rather than be dealt with by the town and parish councils.

Ms Kelso said there is also now a job description , role profile, expectations and responsibilities and time commitment suggestions.

“Our current footpaths officer is Kevin Robinson and he mostly works through Kington Walks. I have spoken to him and he is happy with the new arrangements. Other councils are now,” said Ms Kelso.

Deputy Mayor Councillor Martin Woolford said: “It is an extra layer of bureaucracy.”

Kington Mayor Councillor Phillip Sell added: “It works well for us here as a walking town. I don’t have too many concerns about it.”
