Andrew Hughes was sentenced at Shrewsbury Crown Court after admitting one charge of battery over the incident, which took place back in June 2020.
During the hearing Judge Anthony Lowe was told how Hughes, aged 31 and of School Road, Donnington, Telford had attacked the man - who was described as a close friend - at Hughes' home.
Shehraz Hussein, prosecuting, said that the incident had taken place after the victim and his partner were invited to Hughes' house to "clear the air" over an issue between the families.
The court was told that the families had been close, and had previously been on holidays together.
But Mr Hussein said an argument had arisen and the situation escalated, with Hughes punching the victim in the throat, then kicking him in the head while he was on the floor.
Mr Hussein told Judge Lowe that the men's wives had tried to split them up, but were unable to stop the kick in the head.
