At the time of writing in early December the weather is unseasonably mild, with cattle still out grazing.

And the week’s forecast is showing more of the same, which is quite welcome!

Pens will be made in the barn this week, ready to bring cattle in when the temperature does drop, which reading and listening around, some seasoned and wise men and women of the countryside think it rapidly will, with comments about a ‘hard winter being due’.

When rearing calves,  dad would say the frost was good to kill off the bugs, and never complained as he disappeared off with pails of hot water to defrost water pipes early each morning, whilst calves lay in the comfort of their straw beds, awaiting buckets of warm milk.

These days he mainly checks the forecast to see if he can go fishing!

This Thursday evening Blymhill Agricultural Discussion Group hosts ‘Members Night’, when three local young farmers - Hugo Rowland, Henry Robinson and Scott Walker – will talk about their farming careers and aspirations.

It promises to be an inspiring and enlightening evening, please feel free to come along for a 7.30pm start.

Nuffield Scholar and dairy vet Hannah Batty will be our January meeting speaker, she has been travelling the world asking, “what makes for great teamwork” and we are looking forward to a lively and informative evening, ideal for anyone considering a veterinary career or a Nuffield Scholarship.

In the meantime, I hope that you have a wonderful festive season and a happy New Year.
