Council urges supermarket to fix its loos in Bridgnorth

Bridgnorth Town Council has appealed to Sainsbury’s to fix the current problem resulting in the closure of its toilets at its store on Old Smithfield.

The toilets were closed recently following various issues, including sewage escaping close to the building, although the cause of the issue has not been publicly confirmed.

The town council said that people of all ages, and especially mothers with children as well as older people, are affected by the closure of the toilets.

Town clerk Clare Turner reported that dozens of residents and visitors had contact the town council complaining about the toilets being closed which is over 600 meters from the nearest public toilet on Listley Street.

The council has suffered its own problems of vandalism at the council-owned toilets.

At a meeting last week, the council debated the issue and agree to make an appeal to Simon Roberts Sainsbury’s Chief Executive Officer to try to get a solution to the problem.

Clare Turner said: “We can’t tell Sainsbury’s what to do but, on behalf of residents, we can emphasise that this is a serious problem for many of our residents. We are willing to engage with Sainsbury’s to see if there is any way the issue can be resolved”.

A Sainsbury’s spokesperson said: “Due to ongoing challenges with misuse, we made the difficult decision to close the customer toilets at our Bridgnorth store earlier this year. Our colleagues can help to direct customers to nearby toilets and we are sorry for any inconvenience this may cause.”
